What’s Wrong With Your Napoleon Furnace?
Remember to always turn your furnace completely off before opening it up to look around or attempt any fix.
Is your furnace... | The problem might be your... | What's wrong? | How you can fix it: |
---|---|---|---|
Not heating? | Circuit Breaker/Fuse | Most likely, either the electrical system providing your furnace’s power has shorted or the power switch has blown. | Try resetting your furnace’s circuit breaker. If it has blown, you will need to replace it. |
Igniter | The furnace’s igniter might either be cracked or faulty. | Check the part for cracks, if it is then replace the igniter. If it isn’t cracked, use a multimeter to test for continuity. | |
Cycling irregularly? | Thermostat | Your thermostat might be adjusting incorrectly, causing the furnace to cycle on and off too often. | If your thermostat has an adjustable calibration scale, adjust the heat anticipator. If this does not stabilize the unit, you may have to replace the thermostat. |
Not blowing hot air? | Blower Motor | Your blower motor may have completely burnt out. If this doesn’t seem to be the case, then the connecting belt may have simply broken. | Test to see if power is reaching the motor. If it does, but isn’t running, the motor has likely failed. If the motor runs but air doesn’t move, the connecting belt has probably broken. You’ll have to replace the belt. |
Blowing too much air? | Control Board | The control board regulates the amount of voltage that reaches each functioning part. If the relay that controls the blower motor has failed, it will continually send voltage to the motor. | Replace the control board. |
Thermostat | The contact that controls the blower motor on your thermostat may be stuck closed, causing the blower motor to run continuously. | Use a multimeter to check for continuity. If it appears the thermostat is the issue, replace it. | |
Leaking water? | Drain Pipe | ||
Starting and then stopping shortly after? | Flame Sensor | Your furnace’s flame sensor monitors the burner, detecting whether a flame is present. If it is either defective or dirty, it will not be able to detect a flame. | If dirty, clean the sensor using a fine abrasive pad. If faulty, replace the flame sensor. |
To help make sure your furnace continues being dependable and working optimally, here’s a quick guide to Napoleon furnace problems, troubleshooting, repairs, and overall maintenance.
How to Replace Your Air Filter
We’ve already talked about the importance of a clean furnace filter and how it can improve efficiency, operation, and air quality, so now we’ll go over the few easy steps required to change the filter. Just remember to do this every one to three months during the heating season.
- Check your owner’s manual to find out what replacement filter you need for your unit.
- Remove or slide open the access panel to get at the old filter, which is usually located near the cold air intake.
- Remove the old filter by sliding it out.
- Line up the arrows on the new filter correctly and slide it into place. Close or replace the access door.

Napoleon Furnace Error Codes
Napoleon furnaces all have a tri-coloured LED light on them that will flash different colours and in different patterns to indicate things like normal operation or specific problems.
If the LED slowly flashes a green light, it means there are no errors and no call for heat. If the LED is slowly flashing orange, then there are no errors, and there’s a call for heat. If the LED is off, then it means there’s no power. Here’s a breakdown of what the other error codes mean:
Napoleon Error Code | What this means |
---|---|
LED OFF | No Power to control or control hardware fault detected |
LED ON | Normal Operation |
1 Flash | High limit switch open |
2 Flashes | Pressure switch open with exhauster on |
3 Flashes | Pressure switch closed with exhauster off |
4 Flashes | Lockout due to too many failed ignition attempts (1 hour lockout) |
5 Flashes | L1/Neutral Polarity problem |
6 Flashes | Too many limit trips within one call for heat |
7 Flashes | Pressure switch cycle lockout |
8 Flashes | Lockout due to too many flame dropouts |
9 Flashes | Not used |
10 Flashes | Flame present with gas off |
Yellow LED Off | No demand for high heat |
LED On | High heat demand, operating normally |
LED Flashing | High heat demand, high pressure switch not closed |
When to call a professional to repair your Napoleon furnace
There are more serious furnace issues that will require the assistance of a professional, and those include when the furnace:
Smells like gas: Shut off the gas valve and get everybody out of the house immediately before calling your utility company and an HVAC technician to address a possible leak.
Starts making abnormal noises: Call a technician as soon as possible, because this usually means there’s a mechanical failure or malfunction with the heating system.
Stops producing heat: If the power wasn’t the problem, many other components could stop the furnace from heating properly, including the ignitor, pilot light, heat exchanger, and gas line, to name a few.
Heats but doesn’t blow hot air: A technician will be able to tell you if you need to replace the blower motor or if a belt has broken, as these are two of the most common causes for this problem.
Who Should You Call?
Knowing what’s wrong with your furnace is only the first step, and it’s important to know where to turn if the issue you’re experiencing requires professional attention.
Most people don’t have a trusted HVAC technician on speed dial, and if you’re in that majority, don’t worry: we’re here to help.
With our independent HVAC contractor certification program, you can quickly and easily locate a trained and reliable technician in your area who will be able to diagnose problems and come up with viable solutions to ensure your family doesn’t have to go without heat when you need it most.
Napoleon’s Warranty Coverage
One important thing to know about your furnace is that if something does go wrong, there’s a chance the repair or at least the components will be covered by the company’s great warranty.
Each Napoleon furnace is covered by three separate warranties, including a 10-year parts limited warranty, a 20-year to lifetime heat exchanger warranty, and a unit replacement heat exchanger limited warranty that lasts anywhere from 10 to 20 years, depending on the specific model. And if you happened to opt for their hybrid furnace, it’s covered by the comprehensive president’s limited lifetime warranty.
