In order to help homeowners shop for furnaces and air conditioners, we developed our own proprietary algorithms which weigh a range of criteria and factors to provide an easy-to-compare grade (e.g. B-, A+, etc).
Warranty Grade: It can be difficult to know which brands and models offer the best warranty coverage, particularly because a lot of the key details are hidden in dense warranty documents filled with hard to understand legalese. Thankfully for you, we’ve carefully studied them and created this grading system to account for things like the length AND quality of their guarantee, coverage restrictions and more!
Overall Grade: This grade weighs key factors like efficiency, ENERGY STAR certification, comfort, noise level (for A/Cs), our warranty grade, and more.

Features Overview
Climatuff compressor: Trane has a proprietary compressor they use in all their air conditioners, and this is the Climatuff compressor. Its design increases efficiency, reduces noise levels and improves durability compared to traditional compressors. So even though the XL16i only has a single-stage compressor, it’s still better equipped than competitors to maintain an even temperature.
Easy installation: The XL16i has an easy two-wire connection that makes installation a breeze, and not only will this save you time, but it could also save you money. Installation costs for a new cooling system average between $500 and $1,000 and faster installation translate to cheaper installation.
Enhanced durability: Trane air conditioners are built to provide reliable comfort through many cooling seasons, and the XL16i has many protective features to help it withstand bad weather and corrosion. These features include a WeatherGaurd top and corrosion-resistant fasteners, rust-proof base pan, galvanized louvered panels, a leak- and corrosion-resistant coil, and a rust-resistant powder paint finish.
Other Key Features
- Compatible with the Trane CleanEffects filtration system that will remove dust, allergens, and other contaminants from the air
- Compressor sound insulator and unique fan system for quiet operation
- All-aluminum coil increases airflow
- Blade-down fan design improves airflow and performance
Warranty Information
Like all of Trane’s premium air conditioners, the XL16i comes with a great warranty, as long as you register the unit within 60 days of installation. The expressed warranty includes a 10-year parts warranty for the outdoor coil and internal components, plus a 12-year warranty for the compressor.
Comparable Models by Trane
Model Comparison by Price: Trane XL16i versus Trane XR17
The XL16i and XR17 are in different tiers, and the two models have different pros and cons, but their average cost is about the same. The XR17 has a more advanced two-stage compressor and a higher efficiency rating than the XL16i, but the XR17 doesn’t have as good of a warranty. Whereas the XL16i has a 12-year warranty for the compressor, the XR17 is only covered for ten years.
Model Comparison by Features: Trane XL16i versus Trane XR14
The XR14 is Trane’s most essential and affordable cooling system, but when comparing features with the XL16i, the two models aren't that different. They both have a single-stage Climatuff compressor, similar SEER ratings, and similar specifications. However, the XR14 only has the 10-year compressor warranty, but you could save at least $1,000 by opting for this model over the XL16i.
Model Comparison by Tier: Trane XL16i versus Trane XL18i
The XL16i and XL18i are very similar models, with the major differences between them being compressor type, efficiency rating, and price. The XL18i has a more advanced two-stage compressor, which means it offers even better efficiency, quieter operation, and improved temperature and humidity control. The XL18i has a higher SEER rating, meaning it could save you even more on your energy bills. As such, the XL18i tends to be at least $1,000 more than the XL16i.
