Type 29-4C Secondary Heat Exchanger
The 26-4C stainless steel secondary heat exchanger is a special type of heat exchanger only found on the S series of Trane’s furnace range. This stainless steel secondary heat exchanger helps to reclaim heat from flue gases that would usually be lost during normal operation to help improve the overall efficiency of this unit. When you combine the secondary heat exchanger on this unit with its durable, heavy gauge tubular stainless steel primary heat exchanger you can rest easy that you’re going to receive a high level of comfort while saving money on your energy bills.
Silicon Nitride Hot Surface Igniter
The Silicon Nitride Hot Surface Igniter is an upgrade on the silicon carbide igniters of old. The new Silicon Nitride Hot Surface Igniter is far more durable than the silicon carbide igniters were and use less energy. Also, they tend to last longer helping prevent maintenance calls and improving the overall reliability of the S9X2.
Other Key Features

Comparable Models by Trane
Model comparison by lower price – Trane S9X2 versus Trane XB90
The S9X2 and the XB90 differ substantially in price. If you decide to go with the XB90, then you will be reducing the energy efficiency of your furnace from the 95-96% rated S9X2 to 91-92.1%, meaning you will be spending more on your energy bills over time. You will also be sacrificing technology such the Vortica II Blower, type 26-4C secondary heat exchanger and the two-stage operation of the S9X2 for the single-stage operation on the XB90. However, if you’re not looking for extra features and are happy with a 90+ AFUE rating, the XB90 could be a good alternative to the S9X2.
Model comparison by features – Trane S9X2 versus Trane XL95
In terms of features, both the S9X2 and the XL95 feature durable builds but the S9X2 has some advantages, such as the special type 29-4C stainless steel secondary heat exchanger which helps to reclaim extra heat from flue gases. Also, the S9X2 features the impressive Vortica II Blower which helps to ensure a quiet and even heating of your home. Finally, the S9X2 features Comfort-R technology which the XL95 lacks. So, although both of these furnaces have identical AFUE ratings if you’re looking for additional features in your unit then the S9X2 is the way to go.
Model comparison by Premium Tier – Trane S9X2 versus Trane XC95M
Although both top quality furnaces, the S9X2 and XC95M differ in their main mode of operation and in a few other key areas. The S9X2 is a two-stage furnace, meaning it can operate at high-fire and low-fire modes depending on the output required, whereas the XC95M is a modulating gas furnace meaning it can run anywhere between 40-100% of its total capacity. Modulating is an improvement over a two-stage operation because it reduces temperature variations in the home and helps to save more on energy bills. However, the S9X2 does come equipped with the impressive “whisper” quiet Vortica II Blower, and also includes the same Comfort-R technology as the XC95M. Expect to pay a little more for the XC95M thanks to its modulating operation, but if this is something that doesn’t interest you, then the S9X2 may be the unit that’s suitable for your needs.
